In the late 1920’s a young George Orwell lived in unemployment and poverty in the slums of Paris. Eventually he got a job at “Hotel X” and in 1930 published some articles about his experiences and what they revealed to him about the most lowly and degraded people in society. These articles eventually became the book Down and Out in Paris and London. Here we are, over 80 years later, thinking that the world Orwell describes in the book is a distant memory, but I fear it is being revived. It has awoken and is planning to return… if we don’t stop it!
